Don’t let my endless ability to make bad puns scare you off. Buy and read this book!
It’s about what happens when things start getting real. Wait, I stole that line from some old TV show. Forgive me.
It’s actually about that last summer with your best-est friends before you go off to college and life changes. And it’s about the dilemma of choosing between two guys. Something I regret to say that I’ve never had to deal with, except maybe in a “Do I like Ben Stiller as Starsky better, or do I like Owen Wilson better as Hutch?”
(By the way, the cats in the book were named Starsky & Hutch long before I knew there was going to be a movie made out of the old TV show. My editor wrote me a note in the margin about it, because I was, as usual, out of The Loop. The entertainment news loop, anyway.)
In a nutshell: hopefully something a step up from peanut, like at least walnut, possibly macadamia: Colleen’s parents go to Europe, leaving her at their Maine island cottage for the summer. Her boyfriend, Ben, is the greatest. Until her ex-, Evan, shows up and reminds her that he isn’t actually all that bad, either. And he has the ankles to prove it. (Read and find out what that’s all about.)

“I just stared at the freezer, wishing it wasn't as newly cleaned as it was, that it was the end of the season, not the beginning, and that I couldn't see my distorted reflection on its side. Was my hair seriously going to look that bad on the day I saw him, after nine months of perfect hair and not seeing him? (Maybe the two things were related. He really was evil.)”

What You Might Not Know
I lived in Maine for a couple of years when I was young and fun. Or
at least younger than I am now. I worked at the very coolest small bookstore
in Portland, called Books
Etc. It is still there, which is a major victory for an independent
bookstore these days. I give all due props to Allan Schmid, the owner,
and to all the fabulous people I worked with: Sarah, Amy, Chip, Daisy,
Judy, Amanda. Where are they now? I have no idea, but maybe they’ll
check in here and get in touch.
Georgia O’Keeffe everywhere, did you notice? Can you say “1990”?
Say it with me.
I haven’t lived on an island yet, but I think some people would
like to send me to one.

"You can't get there from here."
Well, you can, but then you have to turn around because you just drove
out to the end of Bailey Island and it's either that or drive into the
ocean.

You can buy Bean boots in smaller sizes than this at L.L. Bean in Freeport.
